Anima Jazz Bar is well known in the area to promote Jazz music and to educate visitors on the various styles of the genre. The Owner's main aim is to make jazz more accessible and for Anima Jazz bar to be a hub for music lovers across the north west. Sarah, who is originally from Sussex, has lived in Warrington for 14 years, She said: "We’ve had people coming in everything from suits to tracksuits and trainers. As long as you have a love of music that’s all that matters to us."
She goes on to say:
"When you say it’s a jazz bar some people’s immediate reaction is: ‘I don’t like jazz’.But there are so many variations of jazz that it rolls into blues at one end and swing at the other. Even Jamiroquai’s stuff stems from jazz and then you have the kind of jazz that Jools Holland plays which is on a massive spectrum. We want to educate people about jazz and show that it isn’t just Jamie Cullum. One stereotype of a jazz club that Sarah admits is accurate is the idea of a dark smokey room.
"That is the case," added the Woolston resident.
"When you are upstairs and it’s dark and the blinds are down you do get a real sense of that old speakeasy. People can’t smoke indoors anymore so we were going to get a smoke machine to give it that atmosphere."
The Owners Tano and Sarah also say they want Anima to become a community hub. So as well as live music every Friday and Saturday there will jam nights and open mic nights on alternate Wednesdays and salsa evenings on Thursdays.
Tano, who has performed all over the world, and Sarah are looking at introducing music and cookery classes and from September they hope to introduce free and informal Sunday afternoon music workshops for youngsters. Sarah said: "If children can’t afford music lessons or can’t afford instruments they can come and we’ll have a stash of a few trumpets and guitars for them to try out. We’ve also had two musical theatre companies who have already been in touch and want to use this as a rehearsal space. Why have such a beautiful venue and not have it used in the daytime?" Anima has the capacity for about 100 music lovers upstairs.
There will be regular special guests while Tano's friend Massimo Covelli, who performed with Malaya Blue on the launch night, and will be a regular performer. Tano, who will also perform at the club, previously ran Bla Bla Jazz Restaurant in Manchester five years ago.
